Female Mummy Under Construction
Design Drawing.

The selected fabrics. The darker is the base fabric, for under-construction. The lighter will be used as the top layer and the bulk of the design detail.
Base pieces cut. Instead of a bust dart the costume is cut with a diagonal princess line. This will create a smoother silhouette. A full princess seam would would cause the top layer to ripple along the length of the entire costume rather than just fixing the rippling at the bust.

All pieces are stay-stitched around the edges to prevent fraying. Normally this wouldn't be necessary but applying the "wrappings" will cause more wear to the edges than normal. When the wrappings are finished edges will be finished with a serger.
The front panel, which will be treated all as one piece.
Mummy wrappings! No need to cut measured exactly. Messy is great.
All pieces are marked so the wrappings can be sewn on symmetrically. These marks won't show on the finished costume.

Wrapping strips are sewn onto the base pieces on the corresponding marks. Each strip has been stay stitched on the other edge to control fray. We want it to fray somewhat. We don't want it to fray entirely away!
The edges have been trimmed and serged. Time to sew the pieces into a garment.

Pieces have been sewn into a bodice! Extra wrapping details are added diagonally across the bodice and strips are anchored under. The collar is added. Next up, sleeves and then the skirt. Everything is wonderfully, but controllably, frayed! Including the sewing room floor...

NEW!
FINISHED! The sleeves are set in, with ruffles and wrapping at the cuffs. The skirt is gathered and precariously hemmed. Snaps are inserted at the back of the collar. All edges are controllably frayed. Just add spiders, worms, cobwebs and dust!
